Chapter Sixteen
The autumn equinox was fast approaching, and Daniel, Elliot and Marla were all assembled in the lounge awaiting the gargoyle. The clock had just struck 9 p.m. when the back of the fireplace rose up like a theatre curtain. The gargoyle quickly washed his paws, and took centre stage.
‘Tadaa!’ he announced bending on one knee. ‘Apologies for my delay, but the darkness drew in a little later tonight.’
The gargoyle had to return to St Celia’s before 6 in the morning, but could leave it the moment daylight evaporated.
‘No problem,’ said Elliot, fascinated as the tunnel’s entrance was concealed once more.
His distrust was equally hidden, or so he hoped.
‘Indeed,’ chorused Daniel. ‘We’ve been getting along just fine.’
‘And we have got all night,’ added Marla.
She had brought along a fresh cucumber, and a thick white loaf, and Thomas’ eyes were drawn to the banquet spread upon Daniel’s table. There were also cheese and ham sandwiches, and they all feasted together with a piping hot teapot, full of Darjeeling, close by. An appreciative Thomas licked his lips before washing down the sandwiches with his favourite brew.
Marla had been to the hairdressers in the morning, and her hair was shorter in a pixie cut. Though Elliot’s mane was still long, and held back with the red hair band Fab had given him. Marla was dressed in brown leather trousers and jacket, whilst Elliot wore the ensemble Marla and Fab had chosen. This consisted of cream slacks, ankle boots, and a turquoise polo necked sweater. Daniel had struggled to stifle a smirk as he had taken their matching fake fur coats to hang in the hall. Thomas was pleased to hear they had brought along a change of clothes for their expedition, and consisting of thick fleecy tracksuits and walking boots.
Daniel reached to the side of the sofa, and produced three hard hats with attached flashlights.
‘I bought these as you suggested,’ he said to Thomas, and looking pleased with himself.
‘Well done dear boy,’ replied Thomas. ‘But first Marla please allow me a closer look at you new hair, it is simply divine my dear girl.’
Elliot rolled his eyes.
‘May I touch it?’ asked Thomas.
He really had been out of circulation for too long thought Daniel.
‘Knock yourself out,’ she replied. She was equal ops when it came to perverts.
As Thomas felt the barnet no one noticed as he quickly scissored away a few strands with his claws.
‘Ahem,’ coughed Daniel.
‘Shall we get back to business?’ asked Elliot.
‘Of course,’ said Thomas, dragging himself away. He looked at Marla.
‘You have the weapon?’ he asked, referring to the crossbow.
‘Yes, it’s upstairs with our clothes,’ answered Marla.
‘Delightful,’ said Thomas with a grin, and then advised Elliot and Marla to get changed.
As they dutifully traipsed upstairs Elliot was disputing in his mind the line between suggestion and control. And just how he, or any other of them for that matter, could restrain the gargoyle if the need ever arose?
Elliot and Marla got changed in the guest bedroom, although Daniel no longer used
